The artist

A second chapter, painted with purpose.

I am a Hyderabad-based artist working in oil, watercolour, graphite, charcoal and ink. My practice is guided by close observation and shaped by landscape, memory, cultural heritage and quiet human moments.

Hello, I'm Arun

From banking to the studio.

After two decades in banking, I stepped away from a familiar professional life to follow a creative instinct that had long been present. My grandmother was a painter and paper-mâché artist, and perhaps it was through her that an enduring appreciation for making first entered my life.

My first committed brushstroke in 2021 opened a new chapter. Since then, disciplined self-learning and daily practice have shaped a versatile body of work—from Indian temples and spiritual imagery to golf landscapes, vintage automobiles, wildlife and still life.

“I want each work to hold more than a likeness. It should hold the atmosphere, memory or feeling that made the subject matter.”

The practice

Realism with room for feeling.

I draw inspiration from artists including Michael James Smith and Andrew Tischler, studying light, texture and depth while developing a visual language grounded in India and my own lived experience.

01

Oil

Layered landscapes and narrative works with depth, atmosphere and luminous colour.

02

Watercolour

Architecture, birds and vintage vehicles captured with clarity and spontaneity.

03

Graphite & charcoal

Quiet studies of wildlife, form and texture rendered through patient observation.

04

Ink

Architectural and landscape drawings that celebrate line, rhythm and detail.

Golf landscape painting by Arun Shanker

Close to home

Hyderabad, golf and the landscapes I know personally.

Many of my works begin with places I encounter repeatedly—the changing morning light on a golf course, a temple structure, a familiar street or a memory carried from everyday life.
